1-2-3 Fruit Dressing

1-2-3 Fruit Dressing

An easy citrus dressing that turns a simple bowl of fresh fruit into something special.

Mother always made this the day before company came. That little detail is as much a part of the recipe as the lemon, lime, and orange.

This is a wonderfully simple, slightly old-fashioned fruit dressing—the sort of recipe that quietly earns a permanent place in the family collection. Make it the day before, let it chill overnight, and gently toss it with fresh fruit just before serving.

Strawberries and pineapple are especially wonderful, but it is equally good with grapes, blueberries, kiwi, cantaloupe, honeydew, or mandarin oranges. Use whatever fruit looks best and make a generous bowl.

1-2-3 Fruit Dressing

Ingredients

  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • Zest and juice of 1 lime
  • Zest and juice of 1 orange
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1 cup granulated sugar

Directions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the lemon, lime, and orange zest and juices.
  2. Stir in the beaten egg and sugar until well blended.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly.
  4. Bring the mixture just to a boil. Continue boiling for 1 minute, stirring continuously.
  5. Remove from the heat and allow the dressing to cool completely.
  6. Refrigerate until well chilled.

To Serve

Gently toss the chilled dressing with a mixture of your favorite fresh fruits just before serving.

This is the sort of recipe worth writing down and passing along: uncomplicated, useful, and forever connected to the happy ritual of getting ready for company.
